As all coaches and players know from experience, volleyball matches take lots of twists and turns, so players need to expect the unexpected, then deal with it.
In this video, mental performance coach Amanda Jones shares strategies for moving forward after a mistake with a positive frame of mind.
Among her tips:
- Make one point worth one point. In other words, don’t turn one mistake into two mistakes or more by fixating on it.
- After a mistake, ask yourself, “What’s important to fix right now?” You don’t have time for a deep analysis. Take a few seconds to think, then make one adjustment and move on.
- Don’t say, “My Bad!” Everybody knows it was your bad, especially if you just missed a serve. It’s better to say something like, “I got the next one!” This helps give you and your teammates confidence going forward.
