Ruth Nelson of Bring Your Own Parent walks players through a passing and setting progression. One player (or a parent or coach) starts with their back to the net facing a young player on the 10 foot line. The person at the net alternates tossing short and "deep" balls (for younger players, this is about the 15 foot line) and the player must toss and throw back the ball.
Progress to passing once players are comfortable with the forward and backwards movement.
Progress with the following:
- Young players catch and then set, both short and deep tosses.
- YPlayers pass if the toss is short, and catch and set if the toss is deep.
- YThree players line up at the ten foot line. A tosser from the other side of the net tosses a ball to the first player, and she passes to a target. Cycle through the line.
