Clinician: Tom Hilbert, head women’s volleyball coach for Colorado State University
Purpose: To train liberos to set both pin hitters
How it works: This simple drill starts with two liberos in the back row and catchers in the pin positions. A coach tosses or hits the ball at one of the liberos. That player passes to her teammate, who becomes the setter. The setter's job is to set one of the outside hitting positions, but to practice being deceptive and not always set the obvious choice.
Variations: To increase the difficulty, the coach can hit harder, toss balls further away from players, or be deceptive with his tosses so the players don’t know which of them will get the first ball.
Requirements: 4 players, a cart of balls, a half court and a coach
