Jim Stone illustrates how to train your middle hitters to take some serve receive responsibilities to create more offensive options. Many coaches train their middle hitters to avoid serve receive at all costs; but having a middle attacker who can effectively pass a short serve is a dynamite tool.
Stone's strategy is to have the middle hitter cover the short serve both in her starting position and covering the 5 feet to her right. This frees up the middle hitter to run the slide, and also allows for the pipe hitter to be an offensive option.
