Jim Stone shows several different patterns coaches can organize their serve receive with. Because you can tailor each pattern depending on your team's particular strengths, you can use serve receive to highlight your best passers and your best attackers.
When deciding on a serve receive pattern, there are two aspects to keep in mind: The best passers should be covering the most area, and the best hitters should be freed up to attack. Below are two different serve receive patterns based on your strongest attackers:
- If you have a strong outside hitter, shift the reception pattern to the right so the outside attacker only needs to cover a small amount of court, and is available for hitting.
- If you have a strong right side hitter, allow the outside hitter to take more reception coverage and give the right side hitter only a sliver of coverage, and is available for hitting.
