Jim Stone, head coach of the U.S. girls' youth national team, runs players through a 4-on-4 setter training drill in this video. The goal of the drill isn’t to score; it’s to keep the ball in play as setters work on getting stopped and turned to set.
A front-row setter and 3 back-row defenders line up on each side of the net. The coach alternates down balls and the subsequent rallies are played out. The catch: during play, setters must do a half-turn before setting.
Stone presents several modifications to increase difficulty and help setters keep track of the ball.
