In this video, Chris Willis shares three volleyball warmup drills that are both cooperative and competitive.
The first drill starts with two players on each side of the net. A ball is entered with a toss from across the net and the teams play over-on-one cooperatively until there are 10 touches. Each time the ball goes over the net, two players take the place of the two existing players, so the drill moves at a fast pace.
After 10 touches, the game is on. The teams try to put the ball down on the other side, but they still use only one touch.
Next, the drill switches to two touch. This drill is competitive from the start with players trying to get a good swing or shot on the second touch. Like the first drill, players sub in after every ball crosses the net.
Finally, the drill has three players on each side. Unlike the first two drills, each team stays on the court until the rally is complete. Two balls are introduced at the same time and the teams rally with one touch using both balls. When one ball goes down, play switches to three touch with the second ball. You can score it any way you’d like. For instance, one team can earn two points if they win both the one touch and three touch. If one team wins the one touch and the other team wins the three touch, it can be called a wash.
Willis says this drill is great for getting players to improve all their skills and can be adapted to suit the team’s level.
