Even the top players in the world can slip into the bad habit of dipping their passing platform before moving it up to meet the serve. Two-time U.S. Olympian Kevin Barnett worked extensively on correcting this issue before the 2004 Olympics, then had one of his best passing tournaments ever.
Here, Bishop’s High School coach Tod Mattox has his libero, Paris Winkler, demonstrate the wrong way and then the right way. When she does it correctly, notice that she says “together, one” every time she passes. She’s referring to her arms coming together before the ball arrives, then making one motion to meet the ball. This reinforces proper form – one motion after the arms come together rather than the two motions passers have if their platforms dip down, then up.
