Mark Rosen of the University of Michigan explains his intensive three-step process to selecting team captains: identification, selection and education. Rosen relies on the team to whittle down the options by brainstorming leadership traits they find most effective, then take that criteria and apply it to the selection process. Rosen uses online surveys with direct questions such as, “Who do you go to about academics?” and “Who do you think people listen to?” to understand critical team dynamics. Once captains are selected, Rosen is honest and open with each selection in what they need to improve upon. Periodic meetings with captains throughout the season keeps a constant communication stream between the team leaders and the coaching staff. Rosen reflects that sometimes the most valuable assessment of leadership cannot be done until the season has commenced.
