Lizzy Stemke finds a creative use for the antenna in this video that emphasizes defensive posture and pursuit.
The defender starts in base defense and drops into defensive position when the coach slaps the ball. The coach enters a down ball to a defender. Meanwhile, another coach holds an antenna above the defender’s head. The defender must keep her toes in line with the antenna, her shoulders in front of it and her head beneath it. As the defender plays the ball, she must stay under the antenna while she moves forward through the dig.
Stemke likes using the antenna as a guide. "If our posture isn’t good to start and our pursuit forward isn’t in a firing position," she says, "we won’t dig many balls or have range."
