Use these 3 tactics if your team has trouble meeting a short-term goal:
1 | Don’t allow discouraging attitudes to penetrate the team
Remind team members that the goal wasn’t meant to be easily reached. Challenges make us tougher.
2 | Recognize partial accomplishment
Especially with a harder short-term goal, recognize small improvements or progress toward that goal.
Example: If the team wanted to increase offensive rebounds 5 per game but only got 2 more per game, pump them up by letting them know they are almost halfway to reaching their goal.
3 | Seek outside support
Find others with a first-hand experience doing what your team is trying to accomplish. They may be able to offer advice or encouragement. This could be former players or you could find other teams and model what they are doing.
