In this video, Jim Stone is joined by National Team setter Jordyn Poulter to break down the benefits of the dropping down to the knees to set.
When rushing to get to a poor pass or a pass that's low in its trajectory, it can be beneficial to drop down to the knees to keep your hands on the ball. To do so, drop the knee closest to the pass down to the ground and bring the hips under the ball. Try to keep the chest vertical rather than allowing it to drop in order to push the ball to either pin. The knee set can be performed with back sets, too. The strength in a knee set comes from primarily the arms and core, rather than the legs in a normal set.
