Over-structuring practices can lead to minimizing the enjoyment of the game. As a coach, it’s important to remember the importance of play.
To instill fun and freedom in the Triangle Volleyball Club gym, Associate Director Mike Schall incorporates 2 elements into his practices:
- “Freedom plaza” – At every practice, players get 10 minutes to work on whatever skill they want.
- Pre-practice activities – Before practice starts, players are encouraged to play small-sided games of short court or narrow court.
This gives players an opportunity to work on skills, attitude, and confidence. Watch the video for more on incorporating free play into practices.
