How can you help setters and attackers connect more effectively on middle hits? Train your middles to locate the ball with their eyes, so they know where they need to move. Try this drill at practice to work on this skill.
Drill: Middle find the ball drill
Purpose: To train the middle to find and hit the ball.
How it works: In this drill, a middle hitter hit two consecutive balls: the first tossed by a coach and the second set by the setter. To begin, a setter starts on the net with a middle hitter about 10 feet off the net, ready to make an approach. A coach standing off to the side tosses a high ball to the middle who hits it out of the air. The coach then tosses a ball to the setter who sets the ball for the same middle attacker to hit.
Requirements: Two or more players, balls, a coach and a full court
