Megan Hodge Easy talks in this video about the keys to hitting an effective and legal power tip, a huge weapon in today’s game.
- 1. Keep the ball in front of your body. If it’s behind your ear, the ref is likely to blow the whistle.
- 2. Use your fingertips, not the palm of your hand. Too much palm often draws a whistle.
A good time to use the power tip, says Easy, is when there are timing or connection issues between the setter and the middle. The power tip doesn’t require perfect timing because the hitter can adjust more easily than when swinging away.
Easy says it’s not important to disguise a power tip because “it will score anyway. It’s really hard for defenders to get under the ball. There’s too much speed and power behind it.”
A good way to train the power tip is using a basketball, says Easy. It’s heavier than a volleyball and helps hitters get in the habit of using more force, which means the ball gets to the floor faster.
