This one-on-one dynamic warmup drill, introduced by Tod Mattox, gives players lots of touches and rewards them for “winning” rallies by letting them stay on the court. If you have more than one court in your gym, you can divide the team into groups of four. (With a single court, groups will need to be bigger.)
In each group, two players face each other from across the net starting behind the 10-foot line. The other two players stand at the post, waiting their turn. Play begins with one player bumping to herself, then hitting over the net for a total of two contacts. The opposing player chases down the ball, bumps to herself and attempts to hit the ball back over. If a player can't return the ball, she subs out and one of the post players subs in. Mattox says this 2-contact challenge is a great way to get players multiple “game-like contacts” before a match, and it's also good for conditioning.
Players are encouraged to take full swings rather than roll shots or tips. The goal is to challenge the player across the net with a hard-driven ball, not a lollypop. To add an extra element of competition, this drill can be run in a ladder format where losers go down a court and winners go up a court after a few minutes of play.
