The multi-part drill you’ll see here, run by Bishop’s High School in La Jolla, California, is great for mid- to late-season practices when you’re looking to refine skills in a game-like manner.
Step 1: Self toss, then approach and lift tip to an off-side blocker, who is transitioning off the net to get the tip. Have players run this from both the left and right side.
Step 2: Self toss, then hit a high, out-of-system ball cross court to the deep corner. When players aren’t hitting, they’re digging. Like Step 1, this one should be run from both the left and right.
Step 3: Long-court doubles. Emphasize solid, controlled bump sets.
Step 4: Cross-court doubles from left to left, then cross-court doubles from right to right.
