The transition drill you’ll see in this video is a favorite of Thunder volleyball Coach Dorsey. She says her team does it “pretty much every day in practice.” The objective for the offensive team is to get 10 kills. If they make a hitting error, they pay a penalty. It can be as harsh as going back to zero or simply losing one point, depending on the level.
In one variation of the drill, the hitter starts in base position and puts up a block, then drops off the net as the coach enters a ball. The hitter then approaches and hits against a fully formed two-person block.
In a different variation, the hitter starts in a serve-receive position. The ball is entered or served at her, she passes, then approaches to swing against a two-person block.
This drill is especially challenging for hitters because the block knows where the ball is going every time.
