Instead of passing or ball handling, Mike Talamantes warms up his ASICS MAVS 18-1 team with a serving drill. Talamantes starts practice by asking each player to hit 10 balls in each of the 6 zones.
He prefers individual serving to group serving and particularly likes this drill because it "makes every player hit every single zone." Additionally, it requires mastery of the short serve, a great tool for knocking opposing teams out of rhythm.
By increasing or decreasing serves to each zone depending on ability, Talamantes adjusts the drill to 15 minutes. This timespan allows players to warm up their shoulders before taking full swings and jump-serving throughout a practice.
