Once players have mastered serving fundamentals, it’s useless to practice serving to an empty court. Instead, add targets to make serving practices more game-like.
Coach Nabil Mardini suggests three options:
- Good: Flat targets — Servers aim at flat targets on the ground, such as a towel
- Better: Upright targets — Servers aim at seams and spaces near inanimate targets
- Best: Live targets — Servers aim at the seams and spaces near live targets
While most players are taught to hit at targets, Coach Mardini believes it’s best to hit away from them because it’s more game-like. Forcing your opponents to move to the ball could produce an error and get them out of system.
