Clinician: Christy Johnson-Lynch, head women’s volleyball coach at Iowa State University
Purpose: To put pressure on a specific player to win points even when everyone knows that hitter will get the swing
How it works: This six-on-six drill begins with a coach alternating chipped-in balls. Designate one hitter on each side as the live hitter. Only the left sides can swing to get kills at the start and a kill earns a single point. If a different position gets set, that player must stay on the ground when hitting. After a quick game to three points, designate a different live hitter.
Variations: This drill offers a lot of flexibility. For example, live hitters could be left vs. right, left vs. middle or some other combination. When working with hitters who tend to be high-error, this drill can also be scored using a method Coach Johnson-Lynch describes in the video.
Requirements: 12 players, a cart of balls, a coach and a full court
