Karch Kiraly shares an important rule that's stood the test of time: Always have your player that's the best at a certain skill be most exposed to that role. For example, your best passer should always cover the most court during serve receive.
A rule that always holds is to expose your players who are best at certain skills. That means your best passer should be most exposed to serves; your best digger should be most exposed to attacks; and this is why teams have one setter who controls the offense. Honoring this rule might look like shifting your passers in the back row so that your strongest passer covers the biggest area of the court, or this could look like funneling attacks to your best digger by leaving that portion of the block open.
