This volleyball training drill gives left-side hitters a chance to go head-to-head against each other in a 6 v 6 format.
How the drill works: Coach sends a free ball to one side. The first set must go to the left-side hitter. If the point doesn't end with the first swing, the first set on the other side also must go to the left-side hitter. If the rally continues beyond a swing from each team’s left, the set can go anywhere from then on.
“We use this drill a lot, probably more than any other drill for hitting work,” says Coach Mark Barnard, who adds that the drill can apply to any hitting position – left vs. left, middle vs. middle, right vs. right. “We also use this as a ranking drill. We have seven outside hitters on our roster, so we have to get one through seven worked out.”
Extra benefit to this drill: Left vs. left offers a heightened challenge to the hitter because the other side knows where the first ball will be set.
