Longtime college coach Diane Flick-Williams talks about the importance of eye work as a defender and shares a drill that requires defenders to watch the hitter's arm swing in order to read the tempo of the shot.
How it works:
A middle and left-back defender are digging balls. One hitter hits continuous balls at the defenders. The job of the defenders is to call out "back", "bent" or "straight" based on the hitter's arm swing and then dig the ball. If the hitter draws the arm back, it likely means she's going to take an aggressive swing. If she bends the elbow, it means it will be a roll shot. If she straightens her arm, it will likely be an off-speed shot.
