Adam Johnson was one of the top beach volleyball players of his era. He won 44 pro tournaments from 1991 to 2000, including 16 with three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly.
Before A.J. played beach, he was a very good indoor player – a three-time All American at University of Southern California and later a member of the U.S. national team.
With that kind of background, he has a good perspective on how sand experience can help a player’s indoor game. In this video, he talks about why he has the young indoor players at his Adam Johnson Volleyball Academy club in Austin, Texas, play sand during the summer, even though Texas summers are beastly hot.
Another interesting point he makes is that indoor is good for your sand game. In his view, the fundamentals of volleyball are best learned in a gym.
