In this video, Gina Schmidt talks about the mindset a server should have when serving, and she shares two things they should never be thinking:
- "I just want to get the ball in."
- "Don't miss."
Schmidt says it's much better for servers to be very specific about where they're aiming. For example, the server might want to target an individual passer's left shoulder. The more specific the target, the less chance there is for a miss, Schmidt says.
Terry Liskevych adds that it's better for servers to serve their toughest serve anywhere on the court than to hit an easy serve to a specific zone.
"In all my life as a coach, I have signaled (where to serve) only one third of my team, including my number one ranked USA women's team in 1995 and '96," he says. "Only four of them could serve a tough serve in every zone."
