John Sample bought Texas Advantage Volleyball (then known as Metroplex Juniors) in 1992 after determining that there simply weren’t enough places in Dallas for kids to play. Sure, really good players (like his daughter) made the cut, but a lot of other young athletes weren’t getting an opportunity.
Today, TAV is recognized statewide and nationwide as one of the country’s top volleyball training grounds. It has won 16 championships, including three last year, and sent 487 players on to college scholarships. All told, TAV currently has 900 players.
Art of Coaching Volleyball visited TAV recently to find out more about their formula for success. Our first question for Sample was this: If you’re starting a club or a juniors volleyball program, what are some of the things you should do to give yourself a good chance to succeed.
