The following is a case study of a player type who has problems listening to teammates and coaches.
Her name is non-listening Nancy. This player frustrates you and her teammates. She seems so sure that she always knows exactly how to do things that she interrupts anyone who tries to talk. It may look like Nancy doesn’t value her coaches and teammates. However, the opposite may be true. Nancy may want to win so badly that she is always dialed in to her ways of wanting the team to get better. That’s why she finds it difficult to listen to what others are saying.
You can help her relate better by doing the following: 1) Ask Nancy to paraphrase for the team what a teammate (Susan) just said during a meeting or practice. Nancy may flunk this test at first for two reasons: a) she wasn’t listening very closely. b) she may interrupt Susan before she even finishes speaking.
If Nancy can’t sum up what she just heard, ask Susan to repeat her words. Again, ask Nancy to try to paraphrase what she just heard. If she suddenly switches to telling you something non-related to Susan’s words, stop her. Again request that she sum up what Susan had to say. Remind Nancy that open communication is essential and that’s why you are asking Nancy to sharpen her listening skills.
Over-all message to Nancy: when communication is a one-way street, the whole team suffers.
