This out-of-system drill, narrated by coach Beth Launiere, focuses on right-side hitting off a non-setter set.
Play begins with a coach hitting a ball to the setter so the setter has to dig. The libero steps in from left back to set the right-side hitter. The two set options are a “White" (a higher ball on the first step of a four-step approach) or a “Red” (a faster set on the second step of a four-step approach.)
Communication is essential. Hitters need to evaluate how fast the play can be run based on the dig and where the libero is in relation to the ball. If the play looks like it can be run in system, the hitter calls “Red.” If the play is more ragged, the hitter calls “White.”
The rally continues until one team puts the ball down. This drill can be made more challenging by adding a blocker.
One important skill for out-of-system volleyball plays is controlling the second ball. Here are some tips from high school coach Tod Mattox on setting a spinning ball.
To make this out-of-system hitting drill more competitive, add scoring. As with many volleyball drills, you can emphasize certain skills by awarding a point when they are performed. In the video, the hitter earns a point by hitting around the block but no point if the blocker touches the ball.
