Volleyball coaches have long debated whether a server should go for it or just keep the ball in on match point. When we asked Nabil Mardini, head coach of the women’s team at Pierce Community College in Los Angeles, he said he has changed his mind on this subject.
Earlier in his career, Mardini would tell his players never to miss on match point. Now, he tells them to go for it. But with one caveat. “Going for it” for him means hitting it 80 percent, a concept he learned from golf.
Watch the video to see why he thinks an 80 percent serve is the best of all worlds when you’re one point from victory.
