To succeed as a head coach, Karch Kiraly says it's important to admit to yourself that "you don't know everything." A good way to complement your own strengths, he notes, is to hire an assistant who may have different strengths.
"A carbon copy of you doesn't add anything to the equation," he says.
Another key to productive working relationships with your assistants, Karch says, is to open up the dialogue so you are frequently getting their perspective. Encouraging this type of two-way communication is also a good practice with your players, he says. "Make it safe in your program to not know all the answers," he says. "(Send a message) that it's OK to collaborate."
