John Dunning, former Stanford head coach, talks about why coaches need to pay close attention to the players who don't start.
"One of the reasons our team won (the championship) at the end of the season (in 2016) was because the other side of the team brought it in practice every day," Dunning says. "They believed in what they were doing and were excited by it."
Stanford incentivized its non-starters by running drills where one player got to switch sides and play with the starters if they beat the starters. By encouraging a competitive gym environment, the starters got pushed each day and the non-starters knew their contributions mattered.
