Ryan Hofer of Trinity Western Athletics and Kerry MacDonald of Volleyball Canada recommend that experienced and inexperienced coaches alike try to learn from coaches they respect, by attending an open gym, scrimmage or practice. Coaches like to share their wisdom and their techniques, but many don't get asked if another coach can attend their practices.
Hofer says that when he first started coaching junior boys, he traveled from college program to college program to observe coaches he liked. From those practices, he would glean what he liked about those coaches, what he disliked, what drills he thought were useful, and what he thought he could improve upon.
As a coach, it's important to always keep learning and growing as an educator and mentor.
