Mike Sealy of UCLA talks about how critical it is for an attacker to have hitting range in order to be an efficient and dynamic player.
Range depends on several important factors: The player must have solid hand contact on every hit, the player must face the court with their chest every time they hit the ball but be able to dynamically move the shoulders and torque the torso to manipulate the location of the ball.
Different locations in a developed hitter's arsenal should include: down the line, cross-body, wrist away, thumb up, and straight on.
