Ray Bechard talks in this video about the process of creating a mission statement.

At the University of Kansas, where Bechard coached for 27 seasons, the core values of the
Jayhawks’ mission were grit and grace.

“We defined grit as being resilient and consistently demonstrating a championship level work
ethic,” Bechard says.

An example of grit? Getting up early every morning and doing every rep in the weight room.

And grace? Bechard says a lot of his players would say thank you to the coaches following every
practice.

“It’s a 24-7 commitment,” Bechard says. “The ability to show grit and grace (at all times) will
help us develop the mission and become the team we want to be.”
