Clinician: Christy Johnson-Lynch, head women’s volleyball coach at Iowa State University
Purpose: To improve overall ball control through a cooperative warmup drill
How it works: In this dynamic warmup, every player has the opportunity to work on every skill. Players begin in five-on-five formation with no middle blocker. To start each rally, a coach enters alternating free balls. Each rally is played out. The catch? Whenever the ball crosses the net, players rotate with the right front rotating off and new players entering at right back. The player rotating to right front always serves as the setter. Once players are warm, the drill changes from cooperative to competitive.
Variations: The coach can incorporate different scoring options to emphasize a certain shot, have the setter play from right back, or--with younger players--only rotate when the ball dies.
Requirements: 12 players, a cart of balls, a full court and a coach
