Making the correct call when a ball is going out is only half the job. The other half is making sure you don’t accidentally touch the ball.
That may sound obvious, but it happens in volleyball more than you might think, especially with younger players. Which is why Adam Johnson, a former indoor and beach pro who now heads up the Adam Johnson Volleyball Academy in Austin, Texas, emphasized it at a recent club practice with his 12s team.
Johnson made the mistake of touching an “out” ball once when he was playing for the U.S. national team, and if it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone. As a player, he was in select company – a three-time All-American at USC, then a member of the national team, then a top pro beach player who won 44 tournaments, including 16 with three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly.
