Developing your blockers’ eyework and timing is key for strong defense at the net. This full-court blocking drill gives your front row a chance to develop their net defense during live-action rallies.
Controlled transition blocking drill
Purpose: To develop blocker eyework and timing.
How it works: Two teams set up on the court with players in base position. A coach yells “Base!” to begin the play, tossing a ball to the team on his or her side of the net. The offensive team pulls off the net and runs an outside hit while the defensive side attempts to block it. On the next play, a coach tosses a ball to the team that was previously on defense so they can run an outside hit. Play continues with each team taking a turn on offense and defense as they run outside, back, and middle hits in order.
Since all players know where the hits are going, it’s easier for the blockers to get into position. Their main job is to work on timing and eyework: watching the ball go to the setter, looking at the setter’s hands and arms, and anticipating the direction the ball is going to go.
Requirements: Twelve or more players, a cart of balls, a coach and a full court
