Out-of-system plays happen, and your players need to be prepared to handle them. Try this simple drill that trains your athletes to get comfortable setting a high, spinning ball.
Purpose: To practice setting an out-of-system ball
How it works: Instruct players to pair up with a partner, standing about 30 feet away from each other. Player 1 tosses a ball high into the air, flipping the wrists so that it spins. As the ball comes down, Player 1 contacts the ball in his or her setting window and sets it to Player 2. Player 2 catches the ball, then repeats the same steps to return the ball to Player 1.
Requirements: Two players, a ball, and a court
