November's Post of the Month - Directional attacking and shot-making for the outside hitter
In this session, Iowa head coach Bond Shymansky explains that outside hitters must always be prepared for any kind of set in any situation. It's the responsibility of an outside hitter to "take the trash out." This means that when the team is out of system the set will often be thrown in the direction of the outside hitter. Based on the location of the set, the OH must be prepared to react quickly and decide whether to terminate the ball or make a second-tempo shot. Outside hitters must let go of the idea that they'll always get a perfect set. Instead, they should make sure to be ready and willing to hit any set, even the “trash.”
Shymansky helps players recognize different strategies to use when there's a good hittable ball vs. a ball that should be hit at a second-tempo speed. When the set is perfect, hitters should be thinking about hitting the ball with pace. Strategies he covers for hard hits on good sets include terminating sharp cross against a solo block and tooling off the high hands of opposing blockers.
As Shymansky explains, a hitter's goal on a "shot" or second-tempo attack should be to keep the ball in play while creating chaos for the other team. A shot isn't designed to get a kill, but hitters need to be precise about where they place the ball. A well placed second-tempo shot can disrupt the other team.
Shymansky also talks about the "roll shot," the "tip" and the "throw" and explains where to place them to have the most success. He emphasizes the importance of keeping your contact point high, your hand open and your wrist strong while executing a shot. These keys will help you deceive the opposing team's defense as well as giving you better control.
