This drill is a favorite of Oregon State associate head coach Mark Barnard, who will be moonlighting this year as the head coach of the Australian women’s national team.
The object of the game is for the serving team to win a point in all six rotations. The serving team starts off in Rotation 1. If it wins the point, it goes to Rotation 2 and so on. If it doesn’t win the point, the other team serves and the original serving team has a chance to side out. If it gets the side out, it stays in Rotation 1 and tries to advance to the next rotation by winning a service point. If it fails to side out, it slips back to Rotation 6.
This drill puts pressure on the “serving” team to score six real points, and it challenges the receiving team to stop them by consistently siding out or by serving for points and knocking them back.
